What I think is the central message of the Great Gatsby is that trying to attempt to change your past can and will affect your future if you don't learn how to forgive, forget and learn from your mistakes and build on them to be successful in your future. The three main reasons why I believe this is because when Gatsby was younger he failed at loving a girl named Daisy and now realises it so now he is throwing many many parties to get her to notice him. Then he even has a companion called Nick which tells him that dwelling on your past can lead to great misery and there is no way you can successfully change it. Gatsby defingly replied "of course you can change your past". Then finally he keeps tring which ultimately leads to his death and him not actually winning Daisy over.
I also have another central message that I think is also true and it's that love can make a man or women do crazy things for one another. Because Gatsby was willing to lose it all for Daisy. He threw parties just for her. He kept telling his mate Nick to invite her over for lunch and dinner. And even tells her to tell her husband that she doesn't love him anymore. Gatsby was even willing to die tring, which he really dies but is still unsuccessful.
